Riding the Rails
Elena, Therese and Janine slept in a slave hut. Strangely, as hot as the penal colony was during the day, it got cold during the night. The slaves were not allowed clothes so they were exposed to the cold during the night. No blankets, either. The only way of keeping warm was sharing body heat. The barn was not insulated and was just as cold as the outside; but there were a scattering of small stalls and huts that were used by the slaves for sleeping. Elena and Therese tried to squeeze into one of the small huts. They were worried they'd be pushed out by the other slaves there, it was so crowded. But the other's didn't protest at all, they simply smashed in, their bodies pressing against each other, and the two new slaves pushed in with them. It was strange feeling one's body pressed against another's, naked flesh on naked flesh. It was an odd intimacy the trio didn't expect and felt unnatural and embarrassing.
